FORB and Gender Equality – Enemies or Allies?
Are freedom of religion or belief and gender equality really enemies, as some people portray them, or could they actually be allies in striving for a common cause?
This course is a non-moderated self-studying course, explaining on how gender equality, with a special focus on women’s rights, and freedom of religion or belief (FORB) intersect and relate in different ways, and what synergies there might be between them. The course targets development officers, donor agencies, officials, diplomats and their staff, but everyone is welcome to take it and will benefit from it.
The main module takes around 40 minutes to complete and will explain what FORB really is, what it protects and why it is not the same as religion. The module clarifies common misunderstandings of the incompatibility of FORB and women’s right to equality and non-discrimination. In addition, it explores how women are affected by FORB restrictions and discrimination based on their religion or belief identity in different ways of men. The module ends with recommendations on how you can be sensitive to and make use of the intersections between FORB and gender equality.
When completing the main module, you are able to dive deeper into certain thematic areas in shorter sub-modules, covering topics like:
- The challenge with religious family/personal status laws.
- When gender equality and FORB collide – areas of potential tensions.
- Gender based violence and FORB.
So far, only the first submodule has been released, while new ones will follow over the course of 2022-2023.
Before entering the module, you will be asked to open an account on www.fabo.org, which is the platform for all our courses.
After finishing the main module, we would really appreciate your if you filled in the feedback survey at the end of the module. This will help us to improve the course.
